A reminder that the call for abstracts for the 12th Annual Population Conference is open and will close on 31 March 2017. DIEGO ITURRALDE APPOINTED
TO IOM-GMDAC
Former president of PASA (2009-2011) and Statistics South Africa Chief Director for Demography, Diego Iturralde, has been appointed to the Global Advisory Panel of the International Organisation of Migration’s Global Migration Data Analysis Centre (IOM-GMDAC). This follows the analysis and publication of a report from the 2011 South African Census and from playing a leading role in collaborations that seek to push the agenda of substantive analysis into migration from Census and surveys in South Africa alongside with the IOM South Africa office, the Africa Centre for Migration and Society, the Agincourt Demographic Surveillance Site and the National Income Dynamics Survey amongst others. Diego is currently working on new initiatives to enhance migration data collection and to expand sources of data that can be used to measure migration, in particular, improved engagements with the department of Home Affairs in South Africa.

Congratulations to all PhD graduates who endured the pain, pleasure and hard work of prying with purpose! Africa is safe in the hands of its experts.
Dr Veronica Rampagane was awarded a PhD in Population Studies from North West University during October 2016. Her thesis was titled "Marriage dynamics and fertility in the era of HIV and AIDS in Mahikeng Local Municipality of the North West Province, South Africa". Dr Rampagane is a lecturer in the Department of Population Studies at North West University.
Dr Jeremy Gumbo was conferred with a PhD degree in Demography and Population Studies (DPS) at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), Johannesburg during December 2016. A qualified technical demographer, Dr Gumbo's thesis was titled “Undercounting Controversies in South African Censuses”. Dr Gumbo is an honorary lecture of the DPS programe at Wits University and Programme Coordinator for South Africa’s first and Africa’s third urban HDSS; Soweto-Orange Farm HDSS.
Dr Pamela Chirwa-Banda also graduated with a PhD from the Department of Demography and Population studies at Wits University. Dr Chirwa-Banda conducted her PhD research on "Socio-economic and Demographic Determinants of Maternal Mortality risks in Zambia". She is a Senior Education Officer with the Zambian Ministry of General Education You can read more about Dr Pamela Chirwa-Bandas PhD journey.

The Quarterly Digest of Statistics (Q3) in Zimbabwe is now available. The Quarterly digest covers topics on health, migration, accidents, crime, labour, agriculture, trade and various other topics.
Demographic and Health Survey reports that were published in the last quarter of 2016 include Tanzania 2015/2016, Zimbabwe 2015, Nigeria 2015 and Senegal 2015.
Statistics South Africa released the following publications during the last week of January 2017:

Statistics Botswana is seeking to recruit a professional for the position (REF 31/2016) Statistician, Census and Demographer with a degree in Statistics, Demography, Population Studies, or any other equivalent qualification. Deadline for applications is 17 February 2017.
Opportunity for a Chief Research Specialist, Research Director and PhD intern in the Population Health, Health Systems and Innovation division, positions close on 17 February 2017.
The Schedule for the 2017 SAQA accredited short courses in Social Research Methods at the University of Stellebosch is now available. There are different deadlines for the different courses.
International Organization for Migration is hiring for the following positions Project Manager, Project Officer, Programme manager, Public Information Officer and Migration Policy and Liaison Officer. The duty stations are in various countries including Kenya, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Somalia and Tunisia. Deadline for application varies for each post.
Canon Collins scholarship for Southern African Students to pursue postgraduate studies in selected UK universities close on 24 March 2017. Scholarships cover full tuition fees, a monthly stipend, a return economy flight, a settling-in allowance and other support whilst in the UK.
Junior Lecturer position vacant in the Biostatistics Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Free State. Applications for the position close on 17 February 2017.
Lecturer/Associate Professor positions are available in the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences at North West University. Deadline for application is 10 February 2017.

Research Coordinator position in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand closes on 10 February 2017.
Call for Abstract is for African Great Lakes Conference is open and papers are being accepted around the theme Population Dynamics, Health, and the Environment amongst other environmental themes. The conference will take place from 2-5 May 2017 in Uganda and the deadline for abstract submissions has been extended to 25 February 2017.
2017-2018 PRF Policy Communication Fellowships are open to PhD students pursuing research in various areas including reproductive health, adolescent health, maternal and child health, population growth, population health, poverty and reproductive health and gender issues. Deadline for applications is 12 February 2017.
Call for Papers AU Echo 2017 "Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investments in Youth". Manuscripts of no more than 2000 words are being accepted until 28 February 2017. Accepted manuscripts will be published during May 2017.

PhD position in Social Demography available at the University of Stockholm in Sweden. The application for the position closes on 1 March 2017.
Contributions for the Young Statisticians prize close on 15 February 2017. Eligibility criteria: be under the age of 35 on December 15, 2017; and be employed by an official statistical agency on February 15, 2017.

Funding available for PhD students who are focusing on methodology and statistical analysis to attend the four-week Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research. Deadline for application is 31 March 2017.
The calendar for the 2017 International Census Bureau Workshops is now available. Topics vary fro Demographic dividend, applied data analysis, demographic analysis and projections, migration and gender statistics and survey sampling amongst many others. All workshops are available on a first come first serve basis and the first workshop is in May 2017.

Call for papers for the European Social Science History Conference 2018 (Family and Demography network) closes on 1 May 2017. The conference will take place from 4-7 April 2018 at Queen's University in the UK.
